SATURDAY 23rd  TO WEDNESDAY 27th  MAY

This year, we had to use the Bank Holiday weekend for the start of Sprite Week because the tides were so late at the end of the week. So we only had 2 days with the river to ourselves!

On Saturday, the wind was a cold NE 3 and we sailed two races, with a longer course for the first one. Ian Barbrook sailing ”Banshee” came 1st and 2nd respectively but damaged his knee in the process so unfortunately was unable to compete for the rest of the week. The start was postponed on Sunday but boats had to wait on the water which was frustrating. The tide was slow to come in on Monday and the NE wind went light so the first race took a long time. Only 3 boats did the second race over a shortened course, finally coming ashore at 8.00pm.

On Tuesday, we did a short course twice round for the first race which gave us much closer racing. The second race was just one lap but the wind died as evening set in.

The start on Wednesday was at 7.00 but we had one good race in a gusty NW 4 -5 with the wind shifting so the beats became close reaches.

A total of 8 boats competed in the series of 9 races, with Bevis Wright crewed by his sister Tessa winning 7 races. Jason & Elise Clitheroe sailing “Aeolus” joined in for 6 races; John Terry crewed by various members of his family came with “Arrow” for 3 days and Kim & Gerry Gibb sailing “Sparrow” did the first race but then felt their boat was not ready for racing.

Many thanks to Bryan Southgate as Race Officer and Charlie Bourn as patrol boat driver for the last two days.

Sheena Berney organised some food and drinks in the Sun room after sailing on Wednesday – 15 people had a happy and friendly evening to celebrate another successful week of Sprite sailing
